The Great Retreat was started during a four-month solitary retreat in the winter of 2011, in the Catskills Mountains of
upstate New York, and then later in Atwood Lake, Ohio. This is the first solo project by Douglas Paul Smith who has played in Ohio bands Academy of Fakers, Your Mother's Boyfriend, Roy G. Biv, The Bushrocks, and Tucson's Shaktipat Marching Band.
